The project title ‘The Body in Progress’ is an on-going project that reflects my time spent immersing myself in the practice and community of calisthenics, a growing sport that brings together diverse groups of individuals in an unexpected and powerful way bought together by the charity ‘The Steel Warriors’.
Since the summer of 2023, I’ve continued to train while photographing and making friends with more athletes within the community. My medium format camera has become as much my side partner as my resistance band, stocking up on film as well as chalk in a space that now feels like a second home.
In this project I hope to show how the movement and discipline within calisthenics is beneficial, how each grab of the bar serves as a reminder to try again, to feel free and not to give up.
Over the last few years, calisthenics and gymnastics in the park have exploded these open spaces in our communities have created room for alternative and more creative forms of exercise.
With every failure, there is always a determination to be stronger. This space and mindset have inspired the progression of my own body, as well as for my body of work. This is example of how sport and community brings people together showing us that it’s never too late to learn or try something new.
